Why This Recipe Works
- Ease and simplicity - These sandwiches are easy to assemble and are made with readily available ingredients the whole family will love.
- Versatile - These are a great way to use leftover ham and are a delicious twist on traditional cold ham and cheese sandwiches.
- Flavor - This isn't your ordinary ham and cheese sandwich. Layers of flavor make these a proven crowd favorite.
Ingredient Notes
- Thin-sliced deli ham keeps this recipe easy. Leftover ham also works great.
- I love the classic pairing of ham and Swiss, but you can use Gruyere, Monterey Jack, Colby, or Cheddar.
- Dijon mustard is my go-to, but deli-style mustard also works well.
- Brown sugar, dried parsley, dried minced onion, and dried minced garlic add lip-smacking deliciousness to the top of the sliders.
- Brioche slider buns are my favorite, but potato or Hawaiian rolls can also be used.

How to Make Brown Sugar Ham and Cheese Sliders
Step 1: Sauté the onions in butter over medium-low heat until soft and translucent, about 15 minutes.
Step 2: Add the mustard, mayonnaise, and brown sugar to a small dish and stir to combine.
Step 3: Arrange the bottom half of the rolls in a 9x13 baking dish. Spread half of the mustard mixture on the rolls. Top with the onions.
Step 4: Top the onions with half of the cheese.
Step 5: Layer the ham on top of the cheese.
Step 6: Top the ham with the remaining cheese. Spread the remaining mustard mixture on the inside of the top half of the rolls and place them on top of the sliders. Melt the remaining butter in a small pan, stir in the seasonings, and brush it on the top of the rolls. Cover with foil and bake at 375℉ for 30 minutes.
Recipe FAQs
Absolutely! These sliders work great as a make-ahead dish. Assemble the sliders up to one day in advance, but don't brush them with butter. Cover tightly and refrigerate. When ready to eat, brush with the seasoned butter, cover, and bake.
Ham and cheese sliders pair well with veggie salads, pasta salad, or roasted potatoes. Try broccoli and cauliflower salad or cheesy hash brown casserole.
I prefer to reheat the sliders in the microwave. Baking them a second time in the oven tends to dry out the rolls. To reheat, wrap one or two sliders in a damp paper towel and microwave until warm, about 40-55 seconds (the time will vary depending on the wattage of your microwave).
