When I get in a rut planning weekday lunches, sandwiches like this triple-decker turkey club sandwich or a classic BLT are my favorites. This Bagel BLT is a twist on a classic with layers of bacon, lettuce, and tomato on a toasted bagel slathered with savory cream cheese.
Why This Recipe Works
- Every bite of this sandwich will have you coming back for more.
- Perfect for breakfast, lunch - or any time of day.
- Easy to customize with your favorite bagel and cream cheese flavors.
Ingredient Notes
- Bagels: I prefer large bakery-style bagels for this sandwich. Jalapeño cheddar and Everything are my favorites. Onion, Pumpernickel, Asiago, and Sesame bagels are all great options.
- Cream cheese: Savory varieties, such as chive and veggie, work best. I love adding scallions and shallots to chive cream cheese. Skip whipped cream cheese. Thicker, regular cream cheese stands up better with all the other ingredients in the sandwich.
- Bacon: Start with thick-cut bacon for its meaty bite, season it with black pepper, or try this spiced rosemary bacon.
- Lettuce: Grab your favorite: leaf lettuce, spring mix, arugula, and spinach are all great options.
- Tomatoes - Beefsteak or heirloom tomatoes work best. They yield large slices and have a higher flesh-to-seeds ratio, which is ideal for sandwiches.

Variations
- Top with a fried egg for the ultimate brunch sandwich
- Add slices of red onion
- Add avocado to turn this sandwich into a BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato)
- Swap out the cream cheese for mayonnaise or aioli.
How to Make Bacon in the Oven
I love making bacon in the oven for several reasons. This method minimizes shrinkage, eliminates splatter, provides easy clean-up, and the bacon cooks flat and evenly.
Arrange the bacon on a foil-lined sheet pan. Bake at 400℉ until the bacon reaches the desired level of doneness, about 10-15 minutes. The cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of the bacon and the desired level of doneness. Drain the bacon on a paper towel-lined plate.
How to Make a Bagel BLT
Step 1: Slice the tomato and arrange the slices on a paper towel-lined plate. Season with salt and black pepper. Set aside.
Step 2: Combine cream cheese, scallions, and shallots in a small bowl.
Step 3: Slice the bagels in half and toast. Spread each half with the cream cheese mixture.
Step 4: Top each bottom half with lettuce, tomatoes, and bacon. Close each sandwich and serve.
Expert Tips
- Season the tomatoes and drain them on paper towels while preparing the rest of the sandwich. This removes excess moisture and prevents a soggy sandwich.
- Season the bacon with black pepper before cooking for added flavor.
- Toast the bagels to help prevent a soggy BLT.

BLT sandwiches are a great base for incorporating other flavors. You can add protein such as ham or turkey and cheese like American, Cheddar, or Swiss. Pile on veggies such as pickles, cucumbers, or red onions. Swap in a different spread, such as Dijon mustard or teriyaki sauce.
